Why listen to your coach?

Oct 2017 - Laura Roca A-MAS TKD
Who is the coach? The English term translates like "trainer". However, it does not mean that he is only a technical director. Beyond being a technique master, the coach should offer personal follow-up to your athlete before, during and after the competition.

You should know very well the age of your competitors, their level and aspirations, which will influence your goals.
To get there, it is obvious that you have to maintain the right relationship with the athletes, but without losing at any time professionalism as technicians. A coach should be aware of several aspects at the same time, such as:
Experience in combat
A good coach of a national team, for example, must have previous knowledge about Taekwondo fights, either having a previous career as a competitor or as a coach of smaller teams, children's teams, youth teams. It goes without saying that it should be black belt.
Know the rules
It is elementary both for the competitor and for the coach to know and be aware of the rules of combat, even more in our Taekwondo sport since they are updated frequently, this will help when requesting claims with the cards, cancel points, add faults to the opponent or increase points to his competitor. This will depend on the final outcome of the match.
Watch the bout from another perspective
There may be many things that are on the mat you do not realize, the mission of your coach is to study the opponent in seconds and anticipate the techniques that he will use, deciphering his tactics to be able to attack or to make your attack even more effective. For example, realizing which leg attacks, which leg uses the most, which are the most frequent techniques, the pace of the fight, the counter attack mode, etc.
One language
It is very important that the coach and the competitor believe the same language, not in the sense of speaking the same language, but to create certain signs or gestures, that have the same meaning for both and that only with a grimace the competitor knows of what is involved and how to react, the competitor will not always be able to see the coach but he can listen to it and it will also be valuable to follow these instructions but without revealing the technique to use with our opponent since in anticipating it will know how to counter it. Example if the coach shouts frantically dollyo direct, direct dollyo !!! The opponent will also hear it and be aware of the attack.
Know strengths and weaknesses
The optimum thing is that the coach is aware of the training of the competitor and that this is personalized since we all have different skills that deserve to be taken advantage of, there is no single training or combat recipe for all, there will be strengths in each one of the competitors.
But your coach will always try to take you to the limit and prove that you can still more , you can often in the middle of combat he asks you for a technique or chain that you think will not come out, but when you do it goes well and marks the point, that happens because maybe you do not have the confidence you need but your coach has it and knows you.
Helps to manage emotions
A true coach is not only concerned with the physical, technical or tactical aspect, he must also be able to handle the psychological aspect and help his competitor to control his emotions at the time of combat. While there are professionals in sports psychology who will help a lot in the preparation part of the competitor and this will also be vital in showing their performance in the area of combat, which must handle certain situations that arise at the time, is the coach, who will be able to for example flip a result in which his competitor is not favored, or if they go up on the scoreboard in the last round maintain calm, nervousness before combat, manage pressure, encourage and motivate.
Convey trust
A great advantage will be to have a good relationship with your coach, in many cases has been decisive in the predominance of the score of great legends where it is seen the level of trust that the coach transmits, how to motivate them and at what moment, the respect they transmit, how they behave while in the coach chair attentive to any event, but transmitting security to their competitor from the place where they are find. They know when to be authoritative and call your attention to reactions, know when to support and empathize with you.
I want it as much as you
The goal of the coach should be to build each athlete with a good physical, mental, and spiritual base. In order to go together fulfilling each goal that you set, you will be motivated and encouraged, to turn errors and difficulties into opportunities, to fight with you, to conquer every battle at your side, directing you.
Your coach is there to guide you and to reach the highest, without waiting for a medal in exchange because in reality the recognition will be only for the competitor, but the coach will be enjoying more than anyone, being proud and satisfied to see his competitor on the podium, or know that they really gave it all.

The most important thing ... always listen to him when he says "Raise the guard
